Rest in Peace Benoît Mandelbrot

Benoît Mandelbrot has passed (20 November 1924 – 14 October 2010). Let us pause to honor him briefly on our blog and reflect upon his work.
The video and song below contains strong language so it's not for the kids...but it honors him in certain ways.   It's more fun than anything else.

  1. Very sad, Mooch. Thanks for posting the news. If anyone is interested, the great man's obituary is posted in the NY Times at http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/17/us/17mandelbrot.html.

  3. Merf -- I didn't realize what particular personal poignancy this loss has to you. Since geometry is your bag though I should have suspected. For those of you who don't know who's esteemed company we keep... Mandlebrot begat Gergen begat Rudin begat Stephenson begat Williams begat the Merf.

  4. Actually, Mooch, the Mandelbrot who begat Gergen is Szolem Mandelbrojt, Benoit Mandelbrot's uncle. You're correct, though, that this has some "poignancy" for me. Some of the first materiel that excited me about mathematics was Mandelbrot challenging the establishment assumptions and his descriptions of the "fractal." Chaos was my first adult experience with math that was challenging and beautiful and real, and Mandelbot is one of its 20th century fathers.
